Death Penalty in Japan is Done by Hanging

Japanese courts have sent a total of 15 people to death row in what has passed of this year. It is a number which surpasses many of the ones of prior years, considering that last year only nine people were sentenced to death.

The last two convicts to go on death row were two men, Michitoshi Kuma and Masahiro Takashio.

Michitoshi Kuma, aged 70, was charged with kidnapping and aggravated murder; he deprived of liberty two 7 year old girls and then strangled them with his bare hands, after which he abandoned their bodies in a remote place.  The other man, Masahiro Takashio, aged 55, committed a robbery in a Northern Japan house, and killed the women living there.

The Minister of Justice said these crimes were too cruel and the death penalty was the only suitable punishment.

Despite international disapproval, Japan continues to apply the death penalty and send people to be hanged. They have been severely criticized both by Buddhist and Christian churches as it is against their beliefs. Also, Japanese authorities have received letters from both Amnesty International and the United Nations, to no avail.

Japan continues to carry on with the secret hanging of convicted murderers and it is believed that there are about 100 persons on death row at the moment.
