This year, the renowned Booker Prize went to first-time Indian novelist, Aravind Adiga. The writer, aged 33, is one of the youngest to win this prize.
Along with the trophy, he was also awarded a cheque for 88,000 dollars; also, this award is a guarantee that his first novel, called “The White Tiger”, will become a bestseller in the UK.
The book presents the story of a poor young Indian man who decides to go to Delhi to get rich; his fear of poverty will determine him to do whatever it takes in order to reach his goals.
The jury has appreciated the novel for the choice of theme, for the description of a contemporary India, from a social and a political point of view: the class division, the extreme poverty and extreme wealth.
The author says he has written a book with which many millions of Indians could identify themselves, and he dedicates it to the poor.
As a citizen of the Commonwealth, Adiga competed with several other writers like Sebastian Barry of Ireland, Amitay Ghosh, Linda Grant, Philip Hensher and Steve Toltz.
