Out of the all the United Arab Emirates, Dubai is the most famous and, at the same time, the most tolerant of all. But tolerance in Dubai does not have the same meaning as anywhere else.
That is what the British couple who were caught having sex on the Jumeraih Beach learned the hard way. Vince Acors and Michelle Palmer have been taken into custody, under the accusation of having had sexual intercourse while unmarried, and most of all, in a public place. They were also trialled for having consumed alcohol in a public place.
In regards to the first accusation, they were found guilty as charged and sentenced to 3 months in a Dubai jail; as for the drinking charge, they had to pay a fine of 272 dollars.
Both parties involved in the trial came out disappointed; the defence lawyer said he will initiate an appeal procedure, whilst the district attorney said he had hoped for a much longer sentence.
This scandal, initiated on the 5th of June 2008, only comes to point out, yet once more, that Western tourists have still not understood that, despite its luxurious tourism and notoriety, Dubai is still an Islamic Emirate, functioning according to strict Islamic laws.
