The US financial crisis, the increasing oil and food prices, the decaying economy, unemployment – all these are affecting the ordinary citizen in more ways than one.
The monthly bills become the average American’s biggest problem and worry and how to get the money to pay them sometimes becomes a matter of life and death.
An outstanding gas or electricity bill, the costs of an emergency room treatment not covered by the insurance…these are expenses that can determine one even to give up family objects and the memories that are tied to them.
In Portland, Oregon, people have started ‘visiting’ the pawn shops more and more, and they leave there their gold chains, rings, bracelets for a certain amount of money which will help them get by.
Internet sites, such as ‘Cash for Gold USA’ accept all kinds of pieces of gold, including dental fillings, and in return the sellers receive a check.
Even in Midtown Manhattan gold traders have seen the effect of the crisis; whereas a few months ago they had dozens of selling appointments, now thy have dozens of buying ones, and the customers range from people with an average income to high and mighty Wall Street employees.
People are selling everything that glitters, even if those objects have been in their families for generations. They would do anything to get money for bills and mortgages and the gold traders say the market has never been better, but the gold trade has never seemed such a depressing job either.
